If you have been following car accident news, you might have heard about the tragic case of the Ivanchuk family. Andrew, 21, was driving his wife Danielle, 21, and their 3-month-old infant daughter Veralyn east on I-24 Wednesday morning when his vehicle drifted across both lanes of I-24, drove off the road and hit several trees.
According to officer Sergeant Woodward, Andrew fell asleep at the wheel and started drifting to the left. He reportedly overcorrected when he woke up, causing the accident. The accident took place near Christiana.
THE AFTERMATH
Andrew was treated for his injuries and released from medical care. His wife died in the accident, and the 3-month-old sustained serious injuries. She is currently listed as in critical condition. Police said that Veralynn was properly restrained in a child safety seat, but that neither of the adults were wearing seatbelts. Officers also said that seatbelts could have made a difference in the outcome of this accident.
As tragic as this accident was, are thankful that baby Veralyn survived. She will stay in our prayers during her recovery.
Later this week, we will discuss the lessons we can learn from this terrible accident. We will also discuss how 2012 compares with other years in terms of car accidents in Tennessee.
