As of Tuesday, October 30, the number of people who died in traffic accidents has decreased in Nashville’s Davidson County by about 10 percent. Shelby County, Tennessee’s largest county, has experienced a 15 percent dip of in traffic deaths, according to car accident statistics released by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
Specifically in Nashville, there have been 38 traffic fatalities in 2012. This is lower than past years’ figures, which include:
- 2011: 65
- 2010: 70
- 2009: 64
With an average of nearly four deaths a month so far in 2012, it could prove to be one of Nashville’s best years for low traffic deaths in recent memory.
Tennessee as a whole, however, has experienced an increase in fatal car accidents. So far, 825 people have died in traffic accidents, nearly 4 percent higher than the 791 deaths the state recorded at this time last year.
Seat belt use could be a factor in the higher number of fatal accidents. In 2012, 338 people involved in accidents were unrestrained, a 10 percent increase from last year’s 307.
