William Garton, 18, was driving his BMW west on I-440 on the morning of October 1, 2012. For reasons still unclear to law enforcement, Garton lost control of his vehicle, crossed the median, and entered the eastbound lanes.
Tremayne Wade, 23, was driving a van on I-440’s eastbound lanes. When Garton’s BMW entered his lane, Wade crashed his van into the BMW’s driver-side door. Garton died at the scene. His passenger, 18-year-old Carlos Gomez, was taken to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition. Responders took Wade to the same center for treatment.
Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the fatal car accident. They suspect that wet roads may have been a factor, but they are still not sure what caused Garton to lose control and drift into the eastbound lanes.
