According to the WTVF-TV, two people were killed following a wrong-way car accident on I-40 on July 27. Metro Nashville Police told the television station “one of the vehicles was traveling the wrong way on the interstate when it collided with the other vehicle around 3 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-40 near the Fesslers Lane overpass.”
According to WTVF, 37-year-old Tavares Natt, of Hermitage, was heading east in the westbound lanes in a 2007 Dodge Charger, before striking a 1997 GMC Jimmy head-on. Natt, and the driver for the Jimmy, 66-year-old Gary Hendrix, both died at the scene of the crash.
Officials are still investigating the crash and a medical examiner will conduct toxicology testing to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), nearly 400 people die each year from wrong-way driving car accidents. Drunk driving is responsible for 60 percent of wrong-way crashes, according to the NTSB. More than 22 percent of wrong-way crashes are fatal, compared with less than 1 percent of all other crashes.
