On January 10, a Tennessee woman died in a motor vehicle accident in Unicoi County. According to police, the accident only involved one vehicle, and the victim, Betty A. Johnson, was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson, a 73-year-old Town of Unicoi resident, was driving on Highway 107 when police believe she lost control of her vehicle and ran it into a ditch on the right side of the road. Emergency crews arrived at the scene but were unable to revive the victim.
“She overcorrected and the car flipped when it got back on the road, landing on its top,” stated a police officer in an article in the Johnson City Press.
Officials are not yet certain what caused Johnson to lose control in the first place, but an investigation is ongoing. Traffic was diverted for a time to allow crews to investigate the accident scene and clean up any debris.

- Speeding
- Low visibility or inclement weather
- Driver inexperience
- Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol
- Vehicle defect
- Distracted driving
