The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) will increase patrol today as people are out celebrating the Labor Day holiday. According to a THP press release, the effort is part of a national impaired driving initiative known as Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.
In a 2011 press release describing the campaign, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that nearly 11,000 people died in highway crashes due to impaired driving in 2009.
“The Tennessee Highway Patrol has partnered with several local law enforcement agencies and highway safety advocates, including the Governor’s Highway Safety Office and Mother’s Against Drunk Driving, to educate the motoring public of the consequences of impaired driving this holiday weekend,” said Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons in 2011. “Our collective goal is to prevent injury crashes and reduce roadway fatalities at all costs. Together, we hope to protect Tennessee roadways from those who make careless decisions.”
In the press release, the THP said that in 2010, 10 people were killed in car accidents on Labor Day. As part of the effort to reduce drunk driving, the THP said that it would establish sobriety checkpoints across the state and increase patrol in high traffic corridors.
