Sadly, there are hundreds of boating and watercraft accidents that occur in Tennessee each year, some of which result in death.
Officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said that 18 people died in boating accidents in Tennessee in 2012. In these accidents, drowning is the leading cause of death.
Last month, a 14-year-old Bristol girl died after two personal Jet Skis crashed on a lake near Goodman Cemetery Road in Piney Flats. According to the TWRA, another Jet Ski carrying two people rear-ended the Jet Ski carrying the 14 year old.
WATE-TV reported that the TWRA took both vehicles involved in the crash, and the accident remains under investigation. The family involved in the fatal accident was reportedly from Bristol, Virginia.
Who Should I Speak to Following a Boating Accident?
In 2011, the US Coast Guard reported that there were 4,588 boating accidents nationally, resulting in 758 deaths and 3,081 injuries. Many of these accidents were a result of boating under the influence (BUI) of alcohol.
