School bus accidents are often terrible, because they involve children and can result in catastrophic injuries, like broken bones, spinal cord injuries and head injuries.
Additionally, sometimes bus accidents can result in death. Tragically, on December 3, two school buses crashed on a highway in Knoxville, killing two students and another person. The crash also resulted in dozens of injuries.
According to CBS News, a Knox County bus carrying students from Chilhowee Intermediate School was traveling east on Asheville Highway when it made a sharp turn before crossing over a concrete median and hitting another bus from Sunnyview Primary School.
The second bus flipped, killing three people onboard, including two children and a teacher’s aide. The victims were identified as Zykia Burns and Seraya Glasper, both 7, and Kimberly Riddle, 46. More than 27 people were injured in the crash.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing. The district said it was providing grief counselors for students and staff.
CAN I FILE A LAWSUIT FOLLOWING A SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT?
Bus crashes are not as uncommon as many people believe. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 11,000 bus accidents caused injuries in 2010. Buses involved in these accidents include school buses, charter buses, public transportation buses and small church buses.
Keep in mind, many school buses do not offer the safety protections found in other vehicles, like seatbelts and airbags. Sometimes, bus accidents occur because of driver error, defective auto parts and/or maintenance problems. The amount of people aboard these buses can lead to large-scale accidents.
Bus drivers and transportation providers must be held liable when their negligence injures or kills someone. This can be done through litigation. It is unacceptable when young children die in transportation accidents.
