According to the Associated Press, a study has confirmed that dialing, texting or using a cell phone while driving increases the risk of a crash, especially for younger drivers.

For the new study, researchers with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute installed video cameras, global positioning systems (GPS), lane trackers, gadgets to measure speed and acceleration, and other sensors in the cars of 42 newly licensed drivers 16 or 17 years old and 109 adults with an average of 20 years behind the wheel.

According to the AP, the risk for a crash or the near miss of a crash among the young drivers increased “sevenfold” if they were dialing or reaching for a cell phone. It also increased “fourfold” if the teen was sending or receiving a text message.

The results of this study should not come as a surprise. The use of a cell phone when driving is a common form of distracted driving, which injures an estimated 500,000 people each year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 20 percent of car accidents resulting in injuries involve a distracted driver.
