WKRN-TV reported last week that charges are pending in a crash that killed three people and injured six others on Interstate 40 in Hickman County on June 27.
The television station reported that the accident occurred at around 1:20 p.m., near mile marker 161. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) said that a Toyota Tacoma was traveling eastbound in the right lane when a semi-truck without a trailer tried to pass it on the left side.
The Tacoma driver then allegedly tried to change lanes, but ended up hitting the side of the tractor-trailer with its rear. The Tacoma then spun around and flipped into a ditch on the right side of the road.
The force of the crash sent the tractor-trailer into the median, where it crossed the roadway and entered into oncoming traffic. It then struck a Mercury Grand Marquis and both vehicles overturned.
Killed in the crash were three occupants of the Grand Marquis, including 22-year-old driver William Shelburne, 19-year-old Claire Shelburne and 50-year-old Laura Shelburne. Six people from the vehicles involved were injured including a seven-year-old from the Toyota and a six-year-old in the tractor-trailer.
The interstate was closed for several hours as investigators reviewed the scene of the crash.
