According to WKRN-TV, a woman was injured in a pedestrian accident in Nashville on June 13, a week after the city launched a plan to help keep neighborhoods safe.
The station reported that the accident occurred at around 2 a.m. in a residential area off Cahal Avenue, near Gallatin Pike. The woman reportedly suffered a broken leg and had to be transported to an area hospital.
Metro Police released no further details about the accident, as an investigation is ongoing.
The incident occurred shortly after a safety organization recently ranked the Nashville-metro area as one of the most unsafe areas for pedestrian accidents in the country, with Metro Police launching a campaign in an attempt to reduce injuries and fatalities.
According to WKRN, 15 people died last year while crossing Nashville streets. Police are asking pedestrians to make sure they do three things: be aware, be seen and arrive alive. Additionally, officers are urging pedestrians to wear reflective materials at night and bright colors during the day, so that they are more visible.
Among other safety tips Metro Police outlined for pedestrians were:
- Slow down and be prepared to stop when entering a crosswalk.
- Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
- Stop a safe distance from the crosswalk to give other vehicles an opportunity to see the crossing pedestrians.
- Never pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
