According to WGNS Radio, in 2013, State Farm paid out $1.1 million in dog bite claims in the Volunteer State.
The news source reported that nationally the insurer paid about $104 million because of 3,700 dog bite claims, sustaining more than $500 million in damages over the last five years.
The insurer estimated that there are about 4.5 million dog bite incidents in the country each year.
One incident occurred recently in Murfreesboro, where a woman was bit in the calf by two pit bull dogs. According to WGNS Radio, the woman had to be taken to a hospital where she was treated for her injuries and later released.
The station reported that in order to avoid incidents, pet owners should:
- Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog, even if it is a family pet. Children are often bitten by a dog in their own household.
- Ask permission before touching or playing with a dog.
- Remember that any dog can be dangerous and any dog can bite.
