Unfortunately, 2014 has been a very bad year when it comes to automotive recalls.

General Motors has recalled millions of vehicles over ignition switch defects, which have allegedly resulted in deaths and personal injuries. In the GM case, it appears as though errors with the switches can lead directly to the engine of vehicles shutting off.

More recently, in a frightening recall, millions of vehicles with Takata airbags have been recalled worldwide. The airbags have allegedly been linked to personal injury and death cases, as they reportedly open with too much force and can spray occupants with metal shrapnel.

According to CNBC, the airbag recall has affected more than 8 million vehicles from 11 different automakers.

Critics have slammed the U.S. recall efforts, saying that the companies involved have chosen to recall vehicles affected in high areas of humidity like Florida, Puerto Rico and Guam, rather than doing it nationwide, as data has suggested that the failures are more likely to occur in these regions.

For the moment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is standing by its actions.

“We have taken an aggressive and relatively unprecedented step by forcing a regional recall on limited information and we will not rest until we know the full geographic scope of the problem,” said Brian Farber, a representative for NHTSA, in a statement, according to CNBC.
