We have been blogging quite a bit recently about the General Motors ignition switch recall that has plagued millions of vehicles, leading to vehicle accidents that have resulted in catastrophic injuries and deaths.
Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that the death toll related to the recall now stands at 19, higher than the previously reported 13. However, it should be noted that many consumer safety experts think the number of deaths are much higher, as many cases have not been reported or accidents were not thoroughly investigated.
The Journal reported that attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who GM hired to implement a claims process, released the 19-death figure last week, although more than 125 wrongful death cases have been filed against the company.
GM has said that Feinberg and his team will vet the recall claims independently.
“We have previously said that Ken Feinberg and his team will independently determine the final number of eligible individuals, so we accept their determinations for the compensation program,” GM stated. “What is most important is that we are doing the right thing for those who lost loved ones and for those who suffered physical injury.”
As of last week, Feinberg’s team had reportedly received 445 injury and death claims, although details about settlements or payouts have not been released.
Vehicles included in the recall:
- 2005 – 2007 Chevrolet Cobalts
- 2006 – 2007 Chevrolet Heritage High Roofs (HHRs)
- 2005 – 2007 Pontiac G5s
- 2006 – 2007 Pontiac Solstices
- 2003 – 2007 Saturn Ions
- 2007 Saturn Skys
