Over the past year, we have discussed how dangerous the Nashville-area is when it comes to pedestrian accidents. Unfortunately, officials estimate that 25 to 35 percent of fatal accidents in the metro area involve a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

Recently, the Tennessean reported that the Nashville metro area had 210 pedestrian accident deaths between 2003 and 2012. Many of these accidents are the result of negligent or reckless drivers, who commit acts like drunk driving, speeding, not following posted signs, not yielding at crosswalks and/or texting while driving.

Sadly, aside from death, pedestrian accidents can also result in serious personal injuries like paralysis, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and severe burns.

NASHVILLE MAN KILLED IN PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT

We bring up pedestrian accidents again because recently News Channel 5 reported that a man was killed while walking near an intersection north of the city.

According to the news outlet, 64-year-old Wayne Elam was walking near Garfield Street and Delta Avenue when he was struck by an SUV on March 28. An initial investigation determined that a 2006 Ford Escape driven by a 62-year-old man struck Elam when it failed to yield to him in a crosswalk.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing and charges are pending.

WORKING WITH AN ATTORNEY FOLLOWING A PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT

Remember, if your loved one is injured or killed in a pedestrian accident, it may be in your best interest to speak to an attorney. An attorney could potentially conduct an independent investigation to determine if negligence played a role in an accident taking place.
