Did you know that the number of home fires often increases over the winter months, as more people utilize items like space heaters or fireplaces?
To avoid a home fire, you should inspect your house regularly for potential issues with its electrical system, gas lines, heating units and appliances.
Fortunately, while the numbers typically rise over the winter, the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) announced recently that fewer accidental fire-related fatalities occurred in 2014 than in any year in recorded Volunteer State history.
According to Clarksville Online, there were 72 accidental fire deaths in Tennessee during 2014, compared to 98 similar fire fatalities in 2013. This is a 27 percent year-to-year decrease. Sadly, in 2003, there were 146 fire fatalities, which was the highest total for fire-related deaths in the 14-year period after 2000.
“For too many years, Tennessee has had a tragic reputation as having one of the highest fire mortality death rates in the United States. We want to permanently reverse Tennessee’s reputation for fire fatalities,” said Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak in a release, according to Clarksville Online.
MY HOME CAUGHT FIRE AND PEOPLE WERE INJURED. SHOULD I SPEAK TO AN ATTORNEY?
Remember, complications stemming from space heaters result in many home fires. Often space heaters are placed too close to flammable items like curtains or furniture. Avoid doing this.
However, sometimes, space heaters and appliances experience issues with defects that can create power surges or overheating, leading to fires. If this happens to you, contact our attorney. If evidence exists that you purchased a defective product like a space heater that led to a home fire, you may be entitled to damages.
Again, aside from death, serious burns can result in long-term healthcare needs, which can be extremely costly. Make sure you have any home fire thoroughly investigated. Also, keep your family safe by investing in a good fire alarm safety system.
