Recently, we discussed the issues that Nashville has with pedestrian accidents. As we reported, it is estimated that as many as 25 to 35 percent of fatal vehicle accidents in the area involve pedestrians.
Pedestrian accidents are not just an issue in Nashville. In 2011, there were over 4,400 pedestrian deaths nationally, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Because of this, many jurisdictions are increasing awareness programs in an attempt to decrease pedestrian accidents.
In Nashville, police have been asking motorists to keep an eye out for pedestrians, in addition to asking people to wear bright clothing and use the sidewalks and crosswalks when commuting by foot.
Keep in mind, many pedestrian accidents occur because of poor visibility. If you are ever on the road and your vehicle experiences problems, make sure you avoid walking in and around roadways. This is especially true on interstates, where a driver may have very little time to react after seeing you.
A NASHVILLE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT
Sadly, on January 16, a car near Nashville International Airport struck a pedestrian, leaving her injured. According to WSMV-TV, the crash happened off Murfreesboro Pike, near Smith Springs Road.
WSMV reported that the pedestrian involved in the accident was having car trouble when she pulled over and tried to investigate what was occurring. A vehicle that was driving by reportedly struck her. An investigation into the accident is pending.
Unfortunately, aside from death, pedestrian accidents can result in serious personal injuries like broken bones, spinal cord injuries and brain injuries, which can lead to costly healthcare bills.
