A Murfreesboro teenager is generating national attention for her amazing recovery following a horrific car accident last December.
According to WKRN-TV, Caytie Gascoigne recently attended her high school prom when only a few months ago it was debated whether she would ever walk again. She also performed in her senior play at Riverside High School.
Gascoigne was in a coma for 21 days at Vanderbilt University Medical Center following the car accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury and several broken bones requiring surgery. The accident occurred when another driver hit her vehicle head-on as she was on her way home from school.
The crash resulted in Gascoigne going through extensive physical therapy, including on-site rehabilitation in Atlanta. The driver of the other vehicle was reportedly underinsured, so officials with her school setup fundraisers to help pay for her medical expenses.
“I couldn’t walk at first,” Gascoigne told WKRN-TV. “I was non-weight bearing on both of my limbs, on both of my legs, and I wasn’t weight-bearing on my right hand, so I literally only had my left hand to do anything with.”
With intense rehabilitation, she has been able to surpass most of her goals and should be able to walk across the stage to receive her diploma when she graduates next month.
HOW CAN AN INJURY LAWSUIT HELP PAY FOR MEDICAL BILLS?
This is positive news for the Murfreesboro community! As this story shows, rehabilitation can be quite extensive following a car accident. Medical bills often reach hundreds of thousands of dollars or more if injuries require long-term care. If you are injured in an accident due to a negligent or reckless driver, make sure that you hold him or her liable by speaking to an attorney.
If a driver is adequately insured, his or her insurer may be liable for paying for your medical care following an accident. If a driver is underinsured or uninsured, you can attempt to file a claim with your own insurance company up to your underinsured policy limits.
By talking to our Nashville accident attorney in the aftermath of a crash, he can develop an understanding of the other drivers’ insurance coverage, as well as your own, and let you know how to best move forward with a claim.
