Recently, an 8-year-old Nashville boy was injured when a vehicle struck him while he was walking to his bus stop.
According to WKRN-TV, a 28-year-old man has been charged with driving without a license in connection to the accident. The station reported that the accident occurred on August 21 at the intersection of Packard and Creekside drives.
The boy was allegedly attempting to cross the street when he was hit by an SUV. The boy, a third grader at Tusculum Elementary, was taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to WKRN.
Although the SUV driver was charged with driving without a license after the accident, investigators said that the boy ran into the path of the vehicle, so it does not appear as though the driver will be charged directly for his role in the crash.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY AND KIDS
With the school year kicking off recently, it is important to speak to your kids about pedestrian safety when it comes to walking to and from their bus stops. Safe Kids Worldwide, a safety organization, reports, “[P]edestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injury-related death in the United States for children ages 5 to 19.”
Because of this, the organization recommends the following safety tips:
- Teach your children at an early age to look in all directions before crossing a street
- Teach your children to avoid potential distractions like phones, headphones and other electronic devices while walking
- Teach your children to use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever they are available
- Make sure any child who is not mature enough to understand safety issues is not walking alone
