Breaking down on the side of a highway can be a harrowing experience.

SAFETY TIPS FOR THE SIDE OF THE ROAD

If your car begins to exhibit signs of an imminent breakdown, pull over as far as you can on the side of the road. The closer your car is to the white demarcation line separating the road from the shoulder, the more likely you are to suffer injuries.

Make yourself and your car as visible as possible, especially at night or in low visibility. Turn on your emergency flashers if they are operable, and turn on your headlights and taillights. If you have emergency flares or road strobes, place them intermittently every few feet around your car. If possible, wear bright or reflective clothing. Ideally, you should keep a reflective vest in your car. You never know when you might need it.

Pay attention to oncoming traffic. Not every driver out there is paying attention. Be prepared to take evasive action if a driver does not see you.

If you are traveling with others, limit the number of people who are outside the car at any time. If someone does not have a legitimate reason to be outside, like placing flares, they should be inside the car.

The sooner you can get back on the road and into traffic, the better. If you have suffered injuries due to an accident on the side of the road, discuss your case with a personal injury attorney.
