Have you recently purchased a car from CarMax? Your car may have recalled parts, including potentially deadly ones! A recent study by groups including the Center for Auto Study and the Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety Foundation found that a shocking number of vehicles sold by eight CarMax Inc. locations included recalled parts that have led to serious malfunctions in the past. These parts include recalled Takata air bag inflators that have the potential to explode, spraying metal shrapnel within the interior of your vehicle.
It is not illegal under federal law to sell used cars with unrepaired safety recalls. However, doing so could put consumers at risk.
The study looked at almost 1,700 vehicles for sale at eight CarMax locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts and California. Among those vehicles, 461 had unrepaired recall defects, and 41 had no repair available. That means 27 percent of vehicles sold at these eight locations contained at least one unrepaired recalled part.
WHAT KIND OF DEFECTS DO THESE CARS HAVE?
Takata Corp. recently went bankrupt due to the largest automobile recall in modern history. Millions of vehicles had to be recalled due to defective airbag inflators. The inflators contain a gas that can deteriorate due to time, humidity and temperature. This degradation can cause air bags to explode upon deployment, which has led to deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Another defect identified in the studied CarMax vehicles is the presence of faulty GM ignition switches. These switches can shut off a vehicle’s engine while a person is driving, preventing air bags from inflating. Nearly 30 million cars have been recalled worldwide since the discovery of the defect, which GM was aware of for at least a decade before the recall happened.
