A man suffered serious injuries downtown after an incident involving a public works truck.
Police say they knew the victim, Edward Batson, 58, because he was a regular at the downtown Nashville bar scene. Around 2 am, he reportedly kicked a Nashville Public Works street sweeper as it went down 2nd Avenue. When he kicked it, his foot became trapped underneath the truck and it sucked him under. The truck ran over his shoulder and arm.
According to news reports, Batson was intoxicated when he began kicking the sweeper’s brushes. The driver told him to stop, and he complied. The accident occurred when he started kicking the brushes again a few moments later.
So far, there have been no charges or citations related to the truck accident as authorities investigate. This is not Batson’s first encounter with the law. Since 1994, he has been arrested over 100 times. Most of those incidents involved alcohol.
We hope Batson recovers from his injuries. Pedestrians are advised to stay off the streets while Public Works trucks are on the road to prevent these accidents from occurring.
